What is MACD?

Moving Average Convergence Divergence plots the gap between two EMAs, a signal line, and a histogram. Traders watch crosses and momentum fades for timing — always within a higher-timeframe bias.

Formula

MACD Calculation: MACD Line = 12-period EMA - 26-period EMA Signal Line = 9-period EMA of MACD Line Histogram = MACD Line - Signal Line Example: 12 EMA = ₹1,050 26 EMA = ₹1,030 MACD Line = 1,050 - 1,030 = 20 Previous 9 MACD values averaged = 15 Signal Line = 15 Histogram = 20 - 15 = 5 (positive = bullish)

Indian market context (NSE)

Reference levels: Nifty 50 at 24,300, Reliance Industries at ₹1,300, Bank Nifty futures at 55,000 (lot size 30). Examples below show how MACD shows up on Indian index, equity, and futures books — update to live quotes in your journal.

Nifty 50 perspective

MACD on Nifty (24,300): on the 15-minute chart, combine with session VWAP and 9:15–10:00 liquidity — index macd signals misfire on expiry Tuesdays without volume confirmation.

Reliance Industries perspective

MACD on Reliance at ₹1,300: daily vs hourly settings diverge around results and ex-dividend dates; note corporate events in journal when macd readings spike.

Bank Nifty futures perspective

MACD on Bank Nifty futures (55,000): first-hour signals differ from post-14:30 behaviour; avoid standalone entries when banking names lead the move.

How to validate

  • Forward-test MACD on paper or sim for two weeks after rule changes.
  • Validate only on trades where MACD settings matched the written playbook.
  • Split results by trending vs range weeks on Nifty before trusting the signal.
  • Require higher-timeframe bias agreement if that is part of your rule.

How to track in TradeLyser

  • Add MACD reading to trade entry notes (value + timeframe).
  • Create tags: “MACD aligned” / “MACD ignored”.
  • Monthly: filter trades by alignment tag and compare win rate and avg R.
  • Screenshot chart context for mentor review on disputed trades.

Best practices

  • Combine MACD with higher-timeframe bias — not as a lone trigger.
  • Avoid curve-fitting settings on less than three months of tagged data.
  • Refresh playbook screenshots when changing MACD parameters.
  • Skip trading when MACD conflicts with written risk limits.

Common pitfalls

  • Treating MACD as a guaranteed reversal signal.
  • Optimising parameters on one bullish month only.
  • Trading against higher-timeframe bias because MACD “said so”.
  • Failing to log when you overrode MACD discretionally.

How to use this in TradeLyser

Record MACD state (above/below zero, histogram expanding) in setup tags. Compare win rate when MACD agrees with daily trend vs fights it.

FAQ

What is MACD in simple terms?

MACD shows momentum by comparing two moving averages. When the fast average crosses above the slow average, momentum is bullish. When it crosses below, momentum is bearish. It helps identify trend direction and strength.

How do you read MACD?

MACD has three components: MACD line (fast-slow difference), signal line (MACD's average), and histogram (MACD minus signal). Crossovers generate signals. Histogram shows momentum strength. Divergences warn of reversals.

What is a MACD crossover?

When MACD line crosses above the signal line, it's a bullish signal (buy). When MACD crosses below signal line, it's bearish (sell). Crossovers above zero are stronger bullish; below zero are stronger bearish.

What are the best MACD settings?

Standard settings are 12, 26, 9 (12-period fast EMA, 26-period slow EMA, 9-period signal). Some traders use 8, 17, 9 for faster signals or 19, 39, 9 for slower, smoother signals. Adjust based on timeframe.

Is MACD a leading or lagging indicator?

MACD is a lagging indicator—it's based on past prices. However, divergences (price making new highs while MACD doesn't) can provide leading signals of potential reversals.
